He adapted some ancient fitness exercises with some of his experience from Zen meditation, martial arts and boxing.

In the 1940's a lot of Pilates studios opened up around New York and some famous celebrities such as Martha Graham became his clients.

However it wasn't until the 1990's when Pilates became a buzzword in the fitness and exercise industry taking on a life of it's own.

Pilates is designed to tone the abdomen, lower back, hips and buttocks to give you a streamlined body.

Through the low intensity calorie burning workout you will not only lose weight but will help to strengthen and balance your body.

Pilates exercises, like yoga, concentrates on focused deep breathing which results in increased lung capacity.

These exercises gently stretch the muscles, increase the flexibility of the body and lengthen the muscles, ligaments and tendons.
